International Summer Bioengineering Research Experience for Undergraduates

Dr. John DesJardins, Senior Lecturer in Bioengineering at Clemson, has recently been named the first Director of Bioengineering Abroad Programs.  Dr. DesJardins efforts towards the development of meaningful international educational opportunities for undergraduate students was recently recognized by the Clemson University Office of International Affairs with the award of a $5,000 grant to assist in the creation of the “International Summer Bioengineering Research Experience for Undergraduates" (ISB-REU).

Dr. DesJardins is one of ten faculty recognized this year by the Office of International Affairs for the development of future education abroad programs including study abroad, international service learning, international internships and international research.  The Bioengineering Department is proud to embrace Clemson University’s commitment to offering meaningful international education opportunities to all of its qualified students.  The proposed ISB-REU program is being considered as a credit bearing international study and internship program. This program would take its initial form from the already existing Thomas Green Clemson University Brussels Center program, and enhance this educational experience with a cross-cultural, research-intensive internship in London, England with the University College London.   While in Belgium, it is proposed that students would participate in a two course Summer study program of at least 4 weeks in length for a total of 6 credits.  Following this, students would travel via international rail to London, England to participate in a research intensive internship in world-class bioengineering laboratories at the University College London and other local academic/medical establishments.  Both the Belgium and London academic experience would be enhanced with significant cultural and historic activities to promote a greater international awareness and understanding of the world.

It is proposed that the “International Summer Bioengineering Research Experience for Undergraduates” (ISB-REU) program will begin with a pilot program in the Summer of 2008.  Students interested in learning more about this exciting educational and cultural opportunity are encouraged to contact for more information.
