Welcome to the Bob Campbell Geology Museum where you can explore the many facets of the earth through numerous donated geological collections. You will find fossilized remains of plants and animals that were buried for millions of years, gemstones that will dazzle the eye, cabochons made from minerals from around the world, and jewelry made from gemstones and minerals.
Hundreds of museum specimens will enable you to see the world through minerals. Amethyst from South Carolina; malachite, fluorite and wolframite from England; and colemanite from Turkey are a few of the minerals on display.
News FlashBob and Betsy Campbell were honored on their 60 wedding anniversary on Friday, September 25th on the lawn of the Wren House in the South Carolina Botanical Garden on the Clemson University campus. After each received the Order of the Palmetto, awarded by South Carolina Lt. Governor Bob Peeler, Bob and Betsy Campbell both cut a ribbon officially opening the Betsy Campbell Carriage House and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum. These are both located in the Botanical Gardens adjacent to the Wren House.
The Geology Museum is now open to the public three days a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
In 1996, Mr and Mrs Robert S Campbell made a commitment to fund the construction of a new building for the museum. Mr. Campbell also donated his personal collection of minerals, gems, fossils and reference books. The collection was received and put on display in the autumn of 1996. Additional donations were delivered and installed in the new museum building in the South Carolina Botanical Garden on the Clemson University campus.
A feature exhibit at the Museum is the extensive collection of gemstones and cabochons cut by Paul Benson during his lifelong hobby. The collection was donated by his family.
In addition to the Bob Campbell and Paul Benson collections, a number of other persons have donated extensive collections to the museum. Displayed prominently are collections donated by Vern Freeman, Ben and Susan Smith, and Kermit and Evangeline Watson. A number of beautiful specimens donated by Bob Schabillion are displayed prominently at various locations in the Museum. He donated an especially beautiful fossil dedicated to Betty Newton, the first Curator of the Museum, who died in May. It was through Betty's efforts that the museum has acquired so many beautiful and valuable gem, mineral, and fossil specimens.
The Bob Campbell Geology Museum is located in a new permanent building near the Southern Living House (Wren House) in the South Carolina Botanical Gardens on the Clemson University Campus in Clemson, South Carolina.
